Google extends support for Windows Phone 8 in Google Sync

updated 07:10 am EDT, Thu August 1, 2013

Microsoft has until December 31st to roll out CalDAV, CardDAV support

Google has extended the use of Sync for Windows Phone Users until December 31st. Google Sync, which provides integration with Google's contact and calendar services, was initially set to be closed to new activations on August 1st, but this has been extended further than the already-extended cut-off date to the end of this year.

Originally, Google planned to drop its support of Exchange ActiveSync on January 30th, writes The Verge, but extended activations for its use until the end of July, in order to allow Microsoft to put support for CardDAV and CalDAV into Windows Phone 8. Though it added support into the most recent GDR2 update, the Microsoft update has yet to reach many of the Windows Phone 8 devices on the market. The extension provides Microsoft and Windows Phone 8 manufacturers more time to push the update to their devices, as well as supplying new phones with the support already built-in.

CardDAV and CalDAV support is only one of a few disagreements between Google and Microsoft on mobile devices, along with such issues as Google's blocking of a Microsoft-created YouTube app for the platform.
