Apple drops price of refurbished Apple TVs to $75

updated 11:39 am EDT, Wed July 31, 2013

May be attempt to compete with Chromecast sales

Apple has reduced the price of refurbished Apple TVs at its online store to $75. Previously the set-top cost $85, about $14 less than retail. Refurb buyers get a third-generation model with 1080p support, and a fresh one-year warranty.

The move could be an attempt to compete with Google's Chromecast, which has so far seen intense sales in less than a week of availability. While the Apple TV supports a broader range of online services, plus local-area file streaming, the Chromecast is only $35 and can push media via Android and iOS apps, or a tab in Google's Chrome browser. Developers can also support the Chromecast simply by adding a button to existing apps, instead of signing a deal with Google.

Apple could alternately be trying to clear out stock ahead of a new Apple TV. No rumors have hinted of one however, and it's not clear what Apple would add. The company could choose to upgrade the unit with a faster processor and 802.11ac Wi-Fi.
