Amazon rumored to use Snapdragon 800 chips in Kindle Fire HD refresh

updated 12:46 pm EDT, Tue July 30, 2013

Three storage capacity options, 2GB RAM, 8MP camera on 8.9-inch model touted

Amazon will be using Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processors in the next generation of Kindle Fire HD tablets, according to a report. Sources state that the quad-core Qualcomm processors, clocked at around 2GHz, will be supported by 2GB of RAM in both the 7-inch and 8.9-inch versions of the tablet, and would bring the mobile device range in line with the more recent versions Google, Samsung, and Apple tablets.

Boy Genius Report has previously suggested that the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD will have a 1,920x1,200-resolution display, and adds to the specifications list by suggesting 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB capacity options, a front-facing webcam, and typical Wi-Fi and cellular networking options. Internal test units are said to be running a customized version of Android 4.2.2. The 8.9-inch model with a 2,560x1,600 display will have similar internals to the 7-inch device, but will have an 8-megapixel rear camera.

Design-wise, the tablets will be lighter than the current models, possibly due to the more utilitarian, "chiseled" styling. The bezel on the displays will be about half an inch on the 7-inch tablet and about 0.75-inches for the 8.9-inch model. Benchmark scores are claimed to be three times that of the current Kindle Fire HD devices.

It is suggested that Amazon may be launching the revised Kindle Fire HD range in the fall, potentially in late September, and while pricing is unknown, it is believed that Amazon is aiming to keep them in line with its current offerings.
