AT&T updates Wireless Home Phone service with LTE Internet access

Provides calls via home phone, acts as Wi-Fi hotspot for 10 devices

AT&T has updated its Wireless Home Phone service to include data access to the carrier's LTE network. The new service, building upon the prepaid options introduced in May, will provide a home phone service over the AT&T cellular network, similar to versions offered by Verizon, US Cellular, and Rogers, except that it will also provide its users Internet access.

The Wireless Home Phone base unit acts as a modem to connect to the AT&T wireless network, according to Fierce Wireless. Two phone jacks allows for a home phone to be connected, usable for making and receiving calls, with the system acting as a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to ten wireless devices to use its Internet connection. One Ethernet port is also supplied for wired network access.

The service is currently operational in Baltimore, Eastern Pennsylvania, Southern New Jersey, Virginia, and Washington D.C., along with other east coast areas, with a view to rolling it out across the United States. Unlimited nationwide calling costs $20 in the base pack, with a 10GB, 20GB or 30GB allowance version available at $60, $90, and $120 per month, with a $10 charge per 1GB of overuse.
