Sony, Panasonic working on optical discs capable of storing 300GB

updated 10:41 am EDT, Mon July 29, 2013

New discs to help in data archiving, could be out by end of 2015

Sony and Panasonic are collaborating on a new optical disc format with a potential recording capacity of at least 300GB. The basic agreement between the two companies to develop the standard seeks to create professional-use optical discs aimed at the archiving market, and hopes to start selling the new discs to enterprise customers by the end of 2015.

Both companies currently offer optical disc archiving systems, which the future high-capacity discs could in theory be added to relatively easily. In September, Sony released an archive system that used twelve 25GB discs in a single cartridge. Earlier this month, Panasonic launched its LB-DM9 range of similar disc storage systems, which used a magazine less than an inch thick to hold twelve 100GB optical discs. These systems are being marketed to companies that require high capacity storage for content, such as the source files of high definition movies or for data in a data center.

Despite the gradual move from items typically sold on optical discs to downloadable versions, there is a possibility for the format to trickle down to the general public. While DVDs paved the way for Blu-ray and HD versions of movies, films shot in the 4K resolution will likely take up more space than is currently offered by Blu-ray and modern encoding methods, opening the door to these higher-capacity discs as well as more efficient video codecs.
