Low-cost iPhone to be called iPhone 5C?
The rumored low-cost Apple iPhone could be called the iPhone 5C, if a picture of its purported packaging as seen on WeiPhone is to be believed. Current speculation around the naming centers on various images of the plastic device appearing in a range of different colors, with the 'C' standing for 'Color.' While it is possible that this case is destined for the low-cost iPhone, it could equally be destined for Chinese markets for colored iPhone knock-offs that could hit the streets of China before Apple launches its own device.
Lending weight to the leak is that all the current leaks to date for the budget iPhone have indicated that it will center on a 4-inch display like the current iPhone 5. By adopting the iPhone 5 family name, it also helps to give the device some of the brand cache that the current iPhone flagship carries. At the same time, it leaves room for Apple to differentiate the device from its next flagship model, which is widely expected to be called the iPhone 5S. However, as Apple demonstrated when it called the third-generation iPad the 'new iPad,' it could still surprise when the iPhone 5 successor eventually launches.
The latest indicators point to a September launch for both devices, with mass production of the next-generation iPhone already believed to have started.
