Hack shows Chromecast is not built on Chrome OS

Google's Chromecast media streaming device just saw release, but hackers have already cracked open the device's operating system, potentially enabling expanded capabilities for the device. Engadget earlier today noted the appearance of a video demonstrating the hack process. Google typically encourages the tech community to tweak its devices to their own needs, but the company has not yet commented on this latest development.

The hack came by way of GTVHacker, which confirmed that -- contrary to Google's statements at the device's unveiling -- Chromecast does not run Chrome OS. Instead, the hackers found that Chromecaset runs a modified version of the Google TV operating system, "but with all of the Bionic/Dalvic stripped out and replaced with a single binary for Chromecast."

The diminutive streaming device debuted to strong demand, selling out very quickly across multiple online retail outlets. Google had initially offered three months of Netflix access for free along with purchase of the $35 attachment, but the search giant was forced to suspend that order in the face of demand. Reportedly, Google ran out of free-access codes, but the company says the deal may come back in the near future.
