updated 11:07 am EDT, Fri July 26, 2013

Expansion to 19 new cities could help pull customers from Cricket Wireless

MetroPCS has expanded its network by another 15 markets, making the carrier effectively double its reach in less than three months. The roll out to 19 new cities is accompanied by the addition of two new 4G LTE-enabled smartphones for the phone network, namely the LG Optimus F3, and the carrier's first Windows Phone 8 device, the Nokia Lumia 521.

The network is now available in Baltimore, MD; Birmingham, AL; Cleveland Toledo, Sandusky, and Akron, OH; Corpus Christi, Houston, Austin, San Antonio, and Rio Grande Valley, TX; Fresno and San Diego, CA; Memphis, TN; Seattle and Tacoma, WA; Tallahassee, FL; and Washington, DC. CNet notes that there is a significant overlap with markets covered by Leap Wireless, a prepaid carrier that AT&T has agreed to acquire, which T-Mobile and MetroPCS could use to to their advantage by encouraging customers over from Leap's Cricket Wireless brand.

The Nokia Lumia 521 and the LG Optimus F3 will be available in select markets from today onwards, at a cost of $99 and $149 respectively.
