Android special event now up on YouTube

Google has posted its Android special event from the past Wednesday where it launched the new Nexus 7, Android 4.3, and the Chromecast streaming dongle. Although the one-hour event was streamed live, it has now been made available for anyone who missed the announcements to view in their own time, and is embedded below. The event is notable for the additional pressure that Google has put on Apple to get an iPad mini with Retina display out the door as soon as possible, while its Chromecast device has also put Apple's (albeit more capable) Apple TV media center under some price pressure as well.

The new Nexus 7, which like the first has been co-developed with Asus, improves on the original device in every way. Its new display boasts the highest pixel density of any tablet on the market at 323ppi, comfortably beating out the Apple iPad with its 9.7-inch Retina display with its 264ppi. The iPad mini 7.9-inch is left lagging well behind at just 163ppi. Google has also trimmed down the new Nexus 7 weight by 50 grams and also reduced its overall footprint. Performance from its Snapdragon CPU is 1.8x that of its Tegra 3 predecessor, while graphics performance is up 4x. It is also the first device to ship with Android 4.3.

Android 4.3 brings with it a number of key enhancements including the introduction of Bluetooth Smart (Bluetooth 4.0) support as well as support for enhanced graphics capabilities by baking in OpenGL ES 3.0. There are also new options for restricted user profiles, faster user switching and improved text input among other under the hood improvements. The update is already rolling out to Nexus 4, Nexus 10 and Galaxy Nexus users, with the Google Play Editions of the Galaxy S4 and HTC One next in line.

The Chromecast streaming dongle has also generated extremely high demand, according to Google, since it launched at the low price point of just $35. The company has had to quickly close an initial promotional offer of a three-months free Netflix subscription after it quickly sold out online at Amazon and Best Buy. While it doesn't offer the full capabilities of stand-alone devices like Apple TV and Roku, it leverages user's smartphones to achieve similar capabilities. [via GSM Arena]
