Release keeps Jelly Bean name

[Updated with download link] Google has released Android 4.3, a minor update that will continue to be distributed under the Jelly Bean monicker. The mobile OS is claimed to bring improved performance, along with new APIs for developers. Most of the tweaks are under the hood, however apps can now provide new ways to access and interact with notification streams or send notifications to Bluetooth devices.

The search giant also worked to improve the mobile Chrome browser and Maps app, integrating Google Translate to the former and bringing new exploration options to the latter.

Game developers can take advantage of OpenGL ES 3.0, which brings improved rendering capabilities when handling effects such as shadows and reflections. The OS update is also said to simplify DRM integration for streaming content, while a VP8 encoder has been built in for video capture.

Other enhancements include Bluetooth Smart support, enabling communication with low-power sensors and devices, and profile restrictions that limit access to apps when a device is being used for purposes such as kiosks or sharing with family and friends.

Android 4.3 is available now as a free update for the Nexus 4, Nexus 10, Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus, before heading to the Google Editions of the HTC One and Galaxy S4 in the near future.

Update: The Android 4.3 factory images have been posted on Google's developer site through the Android Open Source Project. [via Engadget and AndroidPolice]
