AOC unveils single USB 3.0 cable 15.6-inch external display

updated 06:25 pm EDT, Wed July 24, 2013

Monitor powered by and receives data from a single USB 3.0 cable

Display technology company AOC, in partnership with DisplayLink, have announced the new AOC E1659FWU -- a portable 16-inch monitor that receives both power and signal through a single USB 3.0 cable. Compatible with both Mac and PC, the USB 3.0 Monitor has a 15.6-inch viewing window that supports 1366x768 resolution at 60Hz.

The E1659FWU comes with its own monitor carry case for complete flexibility when traveling, and easily fits in most notebook bags. The piano black portable monitor is 13mm thinner than the previous model, and converts from landscape to portrait view with its foldable stand.

The display has a contrast ratio of 500:1, with a response time of 5ms. Power consumption peak is 7W. The display is Windows 7, Windows 8, and Max OS X compatible. A carrying case is included with purchase.

Set to ship in August, the E1659FWU monitor is now available for pre-sale at Amazon.com for $139.

Now if this had a pressure-sensitive pen digitizer built in, it would be a REALLY cool product to compete with the low end of Wacom's Cintiq line at presumably a significantly lower cost and at the very least with a much thinner cord and the ability to run the thing off of a laptop on the road.

How does the fact that this does not run from the graphics card effect its performance?

I would think that for general use like text and surfing, it'll be fine, but I wouldn't want to use it for gaming.

No Mac drivers on website, instruction manual only for Windows.

OSX 10.6 and up don't need specific drivers for it.
