HTC Desire 500 brings Sense 5, new polycarbonate look

HTC has launched the Desire 500 in its home market of Taiwan. The new mid-range handset drops the premium aluminium look and feel of its flagship One range and switches to an updated version of HTC's polycarbonate-bodied model design aesthetic. While the hardware may be lacking some features like HTC's front-facing stereo BoomSound speakers, it does run HTC's latest Android build Sense 5.0, which includes enhancements such as BlinkFeed for social networks and other updates at a glance.

While the spec sheet is generally modest, HTC has brought a quad-core processor to the low-end o the market for the first time in a segment that has typically featured single-core or dual core CPUs. The device packs a Snapdragon 200 quad-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz. On the rear of the Desire 500, HTC has incorporated an 8-megapixel camera with autofocus and an LED flash. It's backside illuminated sensor is supplemented by a dedicated HTC ImageChip which can shoot photos in a burst mode. This is tied into the Photo app that includes a gallery with video highlights.

Connectivity on the Desire 500 includes a microSD card slot to supplement the small 4GB of on board storage. The 3G radio supports HSDPA with a maximum downlink of 7.2Mbps, although it also incorporates the latest Bluetooth 4.0 standard with aptX and supports Wi-Fi 802.11n networks. The built-in battery has a capacity of 1800mAh, which should help to keep its 4.3-inch WVGA display powered for a typical day's use. [via Engadget]
