Samsung: GS3 exploded due to unofficial battery

updated 07:48 pm EDT, Sat July 20, 2013

Third party battery said to be unauthorized, faulty

Samsung has made comment on the case of an exploding battery in a Galaxy S III, determining that the battery was an unauthorized component. The GS3 in question belonged to a woman in Switzerland, and the South Korean giant acquired the damaged device to inspect it. Samsung released a statement to Le Matin saying that the battery that was in the phone at the time of the explosion "was not supplied or manufactured by Samsung or a company authorized by Samsung."

The owner of the device suffered burns on her thighs, and images taken of the device appear to show a Samsung sticker on the battery. The sticker may, in fact, be fake, and the battery could be a counterfeit made by an unauthorized company.

The Switzerland incident was at least the second major battery explosion incident involving a Galaxy S III in the last year. In June of 2012, the battery in a Galaxy S III exploded in a car mount, sending a white flame and sparks shooting out of the device.
