Best Buy now discounting MacBook Pros, up to $300 off for students

updated 06:30 pm EDT, Thu July 18, 2013

Back-to-school sale knocks $200 off for everyone else

Hot on the heels of its discounts on the current-generation Haswell MacBook Airs, big-box retailer Best Buy is cutting prices on current 13-inch MacBook Pro models by $200 as part of a back-to-school sale. The deal gets even sweeter for students who have a school email address ending in ".edu" -- mostly college students -- who register on Best Buy's Student Deals site: they will receive a coupon for a further $100 off the price, bringing total possible savings to $300. The $100 offer also extends to iMacs, which are not currently discounted.

With the $200 off sale, anyone can get the base 13-inch MacBook Pro, which comes with a 500MB hard drive, 4GB of RAM and an Intel Core i5 processor for $999, and the ".edu" email and registration on the site lowers that price to $899, by far the best deal available for that model. Amazon is matching the $200-off incentive on the base and 8GB, 750GB HD versions of the 13-inch MBP, the latter of which now sells for $1,299 during the promotion. It should be noted that Apple is expected to update the MacBook Pro line with new Haswell processors sometime in the near future, which should dramatically improve battery life as it has with the MacBook Air.

The sale just started today and will end on July 27. The discount can be obtained either in-store or online.
