Yahoo: password may be compromised by 'open in transit' flaw

Micro-blogging service Tumblr, owned by Yahoo, admitted on Tuesday that a bug in the iOS version of the app transmitted passwords in an unencrypted fashion, meaning they could have been compromised if anyone was "sniffing" Wi-Fi network traffic. The company recommended that users change their password "on Tumblr and anywhere els you may have been using the same password" and reminded users that a better practice is to use different passwords for different services through a strong password generator and management program like Keychain or 1Password. An update has been issued that fixes the problem, and the company said it was "tremendously sorry for this lapse and inconvenience."

WhatsApp Messenger gains iCloud backup compatibility

The cross-platform messaging app WhatsApp has updated to v2.10.1, adding support for backing up chat histories on Apple's free iCloud service and adding a "multi-send" option that allows users to share multiple photos in one send operation. The free program, which has changed to a subscription-based system for most users (though the first year's subscription is free), can also now open other apps (for example, Safari) through URLs embedded in messages. Users are cautioned, however, that URLs can point to malicious or scam websites designed to fool users, so caution is advised.

Pocket iOS app fixes bug that caused crashes while retweeting

The app formerly known as "Read It Later," article-saving and offline-reader program Pocket (free), has updated to version 4.5.3, which fixes a problem where the program would crash if a users retweeted a message. In addition Japanese characters are now supported in the tag filter, along with accent marks. The update also corrects a problem with sharing content through the iOS Mail app, and improves the reliability of the Options preference pane. The company says other unspecified bugs were also fixed.
