Sony SmartWatch 2 coming September 9, packs NFC, larger display
The Sony SmartWatch 2 has been confirmed for a September 9 launch after some confusion that it might have been due for a July 15 launch. When it was revealed in June, Sony informed the press that the device would reach customers in September and it appears the company will meet its launch window. While Sony is on to its second-generation smartwatch, Apple's rumoured smartwatch appears as though it won't reach the market until late 2014 as the company grapples with the technology that it plans to pack into the device.
The Sony SmartWatch 2 is a complete redesign from the ground up over its less advanced, but still useful, original. It incorporates a new, larger 1.6-inch display compared to the 1.3-inch type used previously. While the original SmartWatch is not even splash resistant, the SmartWatch 2 is both dust and water resistant and carries an IP57 rating.
Other improvements include a switch to the low power Bluetooth 3.0 standard and the introduction of a standard micro-USB charging port over the fiddly, and proprietary, original cable. Sony has also added NFC connectivity for fast, one-touch, pairing. When it comes out in the next few weeks, the Sony SmartWatch 2 will retail for around $150.
