Tablet allegedly getting 2048x1536 display, 'bezel-free' look

Supply chain sources are backing the notion that the next-generation iPad mini won't ship until 2014, according to DigiTimes. In particular, the people say that the tablet may not go into mass production until the fourth quarter of 2013, pushing its actual launch into next year. It is however expected to get a 2048x1536 Retina display, and adopt an even slimmer, "almost bezel-free" design. It's believed that Apple couple release an interim refresh in 2013 which is nevertheless lighter, thinner, and equipped with better internal specifications than the original Mini.

A fifth-generation full-sized iPad is expected to begin small-scale production this month, the sources say, ramping up to volumes of 2 to 3 million in August and September. By October, those numbers could grow another 25 to 30 percent.

As for its design, the fifth-gen iPad will allegedly switch to thin-film touchscreen technology, cutting weight by as much as 20 to 30 percent. Helping to trim weight even further should be a slimmer bezel. Weight has been a long-running complaint about the iPad, and one of the selling points of the iPad mini.
