Sprint prepares three tri-band LTE devices for sale on Friday

updated 12:55 pm EDT, Mon July 15, 2013

Modem, two hotspots to use 800MHz, 1.9GHz, 2.5GHz spectrum bands

Sprint has announced it will be shipping its first tri-band 4G LTE devices later this week. The Netgear Zing Mobile Hotspot, the Netgear 341U USB Modem, and the the Novatel MiFi 500 will be shipping on the carrier from July 19th, with all three able to use the 1.9GHz and 2.5GHz spectrum bands, as well as the 800MHz range due to be repurposed from the now-ceased Nextel network later this year.

The Netgear Zing hotspot is the first on Sprint to provide international GSM roaming. Using a 2.4-inch LCD touchscreen display for settings management, the hotspot can cater for up to ten devices over Wi-Fi, and is said to last for up to ten hours on its 2,500mAh battery.

The Netgear 341U modem also offers a built-in LCD display, though it is used for monitoring data usage and connection status rather than configuration. The foldaway USB connection can swivel 180 degrees, allowing it to be positioned, and also has an integrated GPS.

Offering a battery life that is said to reach ten hours on a single charge, the MiFi 500 provides access for up to ten Wi-Fi devices, with WPS for simpler connections. While it has a more basic screen, it provides data usage statistics through its web interface, and provides GPS over Wi-Fi for apps.

The Netgear Zing and the Novatel MiFi 500 cost $50 each up-front, with a $50 mail-in rebate and on a two-year commitment. The Netgear 341U USB modem will sell for $20, also with the $50 rebate and on a two-year agreement.
