Man who stole iPhones from wireless store caught by his own smartphone

updated 07:15 pm EDT, Fri July 12, 2013

Thief left behind his personal Samsung Galaxy phone, quickly caught

A thief who broke into an wireless phone store in Springfield, VA and made off with a number of iPhones was apprehended shortly after the robbery because he had left behind his own personal phone -- a Samsung Galaxy -- in the store. Travis Montgomery Snyder, 25, was arrested after police found the phone and tracked him down using his personal information stored there after obtaining a search warrant.

Snyder was positively identified by police as the culprit through his appearance on the store's security camera footage when he set off the store's alarms on the night of February 19. Police found the phone under the broken glass of the smashed front door and later used it to discover Synder's identity, home address and other information, leading to his eventual arrest on Monday.

Apple's iPhones are a favorite target among thieves due to their high consumer value and the fact that it isn't very difficult to wipe and resell them. Apple will be introducing a feature in iOS 7 called "activation lock" that prevents a phone from being re-activated without the owner's Apple ID information, even if the device has been wiped. The Washington Post report joked that it was unclear if Synder planned to resell the iPhones or was simply "seeking an upgrade."

Bwahahahahaaa. Like the posse that tried to chain a convenience store ATM to their truck, only to have the bumper and license plate rip off when they drove away -- oh, wait, that's a new next-gen prototype 5S . . . leaving it behind in a bar is so passe'...

Oh my...this is something only a Conan episode could think up!!

Agree w/ coffeetime... a Galaxy is so bad a person is willing to break the law to get an iPhone instead...either that or only people who are dumb enough to rob stores and leave their phone own a Samsung Galaxy.

(yeah, I know I'm going to catch flak for that but it's just too easy to state!)
