Water-resistant Kyocera Hydro Edge reaches Sprint, Boost this month

updated 05:19 am EDT, Fri July 12, 2013

Hydro Edge can be submerged for 30 minutes, audio over ceramic transducer

Kyocera is introducing a new water-resistant phone, that will be heading to Sprint and Boost Mobile later this month. The Kyocera Hydro Edge, remarkably similar to the Hydro Xtrm shown to Electronista at CTIA's spring show, follows on from the IPX5 and IPX7-rated Hydro released last year by being able to be submerged in three feet of water for up to 30 minutes.

Aside from it's water resistance, the Hydro Edge houses a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon running at 1GHz with 1GB of RAM and 4GB of storage. Running on Android 4.1, it has a four-inch 800x480 display, a rear five-megapixel camera, and uses the company's Smart Sonic Reciever technology, which allows for audio to be heard using a ceramic transducer transmitting vibrations through the screen via cartilage around the ear.

Sprint will be offering the Hydro Edge from July 19th for $20 on a two-year agreement after a $50 rebate, while Boost Mobile will stock it for $150 as a prepaid device from July 23rd.
