LG Display demonstrates 2.2mm-thick 5.2-inch Full HD LCD display

Thin smartphone display claimed as world's thinnest, uses 2.3mm bezel

LG Display, following on from its success with flexible displays, has revealed a Full HD LCD smartphone panel which it believes is the world's slimmest, thanks to a number of new manufacturing techniques. The 5.2-inch display has a thickness of just 2.2mm, as well as a minimal 2.3mm bezel, which LG hopes will lead to sleeker Full HD smartphones and mobile devices.

The new panel offers a resolution of 1,080x1,920 with RGB subpixels, and provides a brightness of 535 nits at maximum, and an Ambient Contrast Ratio of 3.71:1 based on 10,000 lux, meaning it will be bright in light-filled environments. In order to perform this and keep its svelte dimensions, LG used its new Advanced One-Glass-Solution technology, which uses Dual Flexible Printed Circuits between the panel and the touch film, reducing the total number of lines on a panel by more than 30 percent. It also uses a direct bonding system in the form of Optical Clear Resin to improve brightness further.

The timing of the reveal of this display comes at a time when LG is preparing to launch a new smartphone. The LG G2, the follow-up to the Optimus G is said to use a 5.2-inch Full HD display, which could be the same one being shown by the company.
