Microsoft announces reshuffle, new focus on 'services and devices'

Ballmer e-mail reveals managerial changes for 'single strategy as one company'

Microsoft has announced its expected plans for a management reshuffle. The major and "far-reaching realignment," confirmed in an e-mail sent to employees by CEO Steve Ballmer, is said to be a way for Microsoft employees to rally "behind a single strategy as one company - not a collection of divisional strategies."

The change will alter the organization into a "devices and services" company, with a view to organizing its engineering efforts to "better deliver compelling integrated devices and services for the high-value experiences and core technologies" that form its core. "Going forward, our strategy will focus on creating a family of devices and services for individuals and businesses that empower people around the globe at home, at work, and on the go, for the activities they value most," writes Ballmer.

There will be four engineering areas, covering the Operating System, Apps, Cloud, and Devices areas, with Terry Myerson, Julie Larson-Green, Qi Lu, and Satya Nadella respectively leading each section. The existing Dynamics team, headed by Kirill Tatarinov, will be kept separate as it "continues to need special focus and represents significant opportunity."

The Advanced Strategy and Research Group and the Research and Trustworthy Computing teams will be led by Eric Rudder, while Tony Bates will work with key partners in the Business Development and Evangelism Group. Kevin Turner will become the COO, Tami Reller will lead the Marketing Group, Lisa Brummel will be handling the HR Group, and Finance will be operated by Amy Hood. The Legal and Corporate Affairs Group will be lead by Brad Smith, who continues as General Counsel for the company.

Other management changes include the movement of Rick Rashid from Microsoft Research to a new role in the Operating Systems Group, and Craig Mundie will move from SLT to work on a special project for Ballmer through to the end of this year. Kurt DelBene will be retiring from the company after over twenty years of service.
