Sony continues Walkman media player line with E380, E580 in Europe

Personal Media Players have five-band equalizer, digital sound enhancement engines

Sony is continuing to push its Walkman line of personal media players in Europe, with the introduction of two E-series devices, set to go on sale in the next few weeks. The E380 and the E580 retain the same appearance as others in the range, offer video, photo, and music playback, and come with a pair of noise-cancelling in-ear headphones.

The E380, in 4GB and 8GB storage options, has a 1.77-inch display and can play back WMV 9 video for up to four hours on a single charge. In terms of audio, it can play back MP3, non-DRM WMA, AAC-LC, and Linear PCM files for up to 30 hours. The narrower and lighter E580 increases audio playback to 77 hours and video to 14 hours, and increases the file format compatibility to include HE-AAC, FLAC, and Apple Lossless for audio, and AVC and MPEG4 for video. It also has a larger 2-inch display and will be available in 8GB and 16GB capacities.

While the E380 has a five-band equalizer, Clear Bass, and Clear Stereo, the E580 adds Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE) to improve audio from compressed files and Virtualphones Technology (VPT) to mimic listening in other environments.

Though pricing is unavailable, it is thought that the Walkman E580 will be more expensive than the Walkman E380, with Sony shipping them in Europe later this month.
