Apple looking to expand use of IGZO displays, sources claim

updated 04:11 pm EDT, Wed July 10, 2013

iPad, MacBooks expected to adopt technology

Apple is planning to expand its adoption of IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) displays to new iPad and MacBook models coming within the next year, industry sources tell etnews.com. The company is reportedly talking to LCD panel makers like Sharp and LG Display about the prospect. The IGZO-equipped MacBooks will reportedly ship in the first half of 2014.

IGZO is said to have vastly higher electron mobility than the amorphous silicon normally used in an LCD. That can enable faster response, higher resolutions, and/or better power consumption. Apple may be particularly interested in the latter two qualities, since Retina displays are usually the biggest power drains on its mobile devices.

et claims that Sharp is looking into scaling up IGZO production, while LG is planning to upgrade its OLED and LCD production lines to IGZO capability. The technology was originally developed by Sharp with help from Semiconductor Energy Laboratories.
