Amazon to upgrade Kindle Fire displays by end of year, claims report

updated 09:15 am EDT, Wed July 10, 2013

Higher resolutions accompany revised casing, moved buttons

Amazon will be updating its range of Kindle Fire tablets before the end of this year, with a report claiming that at least three new models will be added to the tablet range. The new devices would have a few external changes, such as altered button placements, but the main change will be an increase in resolution of the tablet displays.

Sources of Boy Genius Report state that the seven-inch Kindle Fire will be updated to have a resolution of 1280x800, equal to that of the Kindle Fire HD and higher than the 1024x600 resolution of the current tablet version. The Kindle Fire HD will still have a seven-inch display, but it will reportedly be upgraded to have a 1920x1200 resolution. Lastly, the 8.9-inch model of the Kindle Fire HD will go from the current 1920x1200 resolution to 2560x1600, beating the 9.7-inch 2048x1536 Retina display used in the iPad.

The external appearance of the new range is said to be more angular and "chiseled," rather than the roundness of the existing tablets. Power and volume buttons will be moved from the sides to the back, and the weight of the tablets has been greatly reduced.

While pricing is not yet finalized, the sources say that the new range will launch sometime in the fall, with September being suggested as the launch month.
