Gamers in UK see download price rises in Xbox 360 update beta

updated 12:34 pm EDT, Wed July 10, 2013

Change from Microsoft Points to cash transactions accompanied by higher prices

Microsoft has come under fire for raising the price of games on Xbox Live in the UK, at the same time as introducing local currency transactions. Gamers in the recent dashboard beta test found that downloadable content and Xbox Live Arcade games on the service cost far more than the equivalent cost in the previously-used Microsoft Points.

The Xbox 360 dashboard update beta does away with the virtual currency, as previously rumored, users of Reddit noticed the prices for titles don't appear to match the value of the points they cost before, reports Eurogamer. Items costing 1600 Microsoft Points now cost 14.99 ($22.35), when the equivalent points value before would have been 13.60 ($20.25), with lower-priced purchases having similar post-Points increases. It is also noted that beta testers have their existing Microsoft Points totals converted into the local currency, but at the original per-Point cost.

So far, only beta testers in the United Kingdom have complained about the price differences, though similar issues may be found in other countries. Since this is a beta, it is possible that Microsoft may think again about its pricing strategy before rolling the dashboard update across the Xbox Live network.
