Microsoft adds web player to Xbox Music for subscribers

updated 05:49 am EDT, Mon July 1, 2013

Web version uses similar design to Windows 8.1 version

Xbox Music has now got a web-based version of its media player, available for use by its subscribers. The browser version of the Microsoft-owned music service will play back music from its catalog of "millions" of tracks, and will synchronize playlists between the browser, Windows Phone, Windows 8, and Xbox 360 apps.

The design of the web player mimics that of the redesigned Windows 8.1 app, writes The Verge. A main left-hand bar provides search and main navigational options, with the current song being played and associated controls appearing on a bar at the bottom of the page. It is suggested that an iOS and Android version of the app is in the works, due to the sales page stating that Xbox Music runs on "your tablet, PC, TV, phone, and the Web," though this could just be alluding to the various Windows tablets and Windows Phone devices rather than a more general release.

While subscribers have full access to the Xbox Music web player, free users will only have 30 days to try it out before being forced to either pay for a full subscription or continue using the app versions.
