FreedomPop apologizes for WiMax iPod touch case delays

Carrier says iPod touch case caught up at FCC

FreedomPop, the service looking to disrupt the low end of the wireless industry with free service and low cost devices, apologized this week for delays in shipping its WiMax iPod touch cover. The cover, FreedomPop says, is caught up in the approval process at the Federal Communications Commission. To make it up to pre-orderers, the company is offering a FreedomPop Photon mobile hotspot with 2GB of free data, as well as the possibility of a free sleeve.

FreedomPop began showing off its WiMax case for iPod touch in October of last year. The device costs just $99, and purchase opens up access to FreedomPop's 4G services, which run on Clearwire's WiMax network.

FreedomPop's hook is that, upon purchasing a case, users then get access to 500MB of free data and voice services. FreedomPop makes some of its money off of overage fees, and the company charges for alerts when users are approaching their data plan capacity limits.

The company also offers a case that goes atop the iPhone, giving that device access to FreedomPop's network. That device was said to be held up in the approval process earlier in the year, as well, due to the fact that its WiMax radio was laid directly atop the iPhone's own cellular radio.
