Yahoo shuttering AltaVista, other services as company sharpens focus

updated 08:33 pm EDT, Sat June 29, 2013

AltaVista, Yahoo Axis, RSS Alerts hit by closure announcement

Yahoo has listed off another 12 products that the search company will be shuttering over the summer. AltaVista, a search engine bought by Yahoo in 2013, is the most notable from the list, with the shutdown of a number of services part of "an ongoing effort to sharpen our focus and deliver experiences that enhance your daily lives," according to the company blog.

Browser plug-in Yahoo Axis, Yahoo Browser Plus, Citizen Sports, and Yahoo WebPlayer will all be shut down by the end of June. FoxyTunes, Yahoo RSS Alerts, Yahoo Neighbors, Yahoo Stars India, Yahoo Stars India, Yahoo Downloads, and the aforementioned AltaVista will all be stopped in July, with AltaVista set to go on July 8th. Access to the Yahoo Local API and Yahoo Term Extraction APIs will be turned off on September 28th.

The removal of older services is something that Yahoo has grown accustomed to doing in recent times, having announced another round of closures in April. Despite narrowing down the number of products it operates, it still finds the time, resources, and funds to make some hefty purchases, such as Summly and Tumblr.
