Remote for Roku Streaming Stick spotted at FCC with audio output

updated 12:42 pm EDT, Thu June 27, 2013

Headphone socket to allow private audio streaming on Roku stick

Roku will be adding an audio output to the remote control for its Streaming Stick, according to filings with the Federal Communications Commission. The filing reveals two version of the remote control, showing a version with the headphone socket built into the side of the device, as well as a more conventional model with the new addition removed from view.

There does not appear to be any other changes to the remote, according to Zats Not Funny. It does offer the same sort of functionality as the remote supplied with the Roku 3, in that it will allow users to listen to media playing on the device privately instead of using the television's audio, with controls and audio streaming provided by a Wi-Fi Direct connection.

The Roku Streaming Stick plugs into an MHL port on a HDTV, and provides a similar experience to the normal Roku devices, except that it is hidden behind the television itself. Connecting over Wi-Fi, it can display 1080p HD video and is being pitched as a low-cost and simple way of providing smart TV capabilities to a TV with no Internet-connected features.

Currently, the Roku Streaming Stick is being sold for $99. It is not clear if or when the company will replace existing remote controls with the new version, or if it will sell the updated-audio version separately in the future.
