Apple launches enterprise promotion page for iOS 7

updated 10:42 am EDT, Wed June 26, 2013

Touts features like forced file associations, VPN control

Apple has launched a new webpage promoting the enterprise features of iOS 7, which have otherwise been downplayed in marketing so far. Some highlighted features include app-by-app control of file associations and VPN functions, the latter of which let administrators decide which apps can connect to a VPN, and/or configure them to connect to a VPN automatically.

iOS 7 also incorporates single sign-on for authentication; likewise, a new App Store Volume Purchase Program lets organizations assign apps to users while retaining full ownership of licenses. Downloading and installing apps and content for a group of iOS devices can be controlled through Catching Server 2 in OS X Mavericks Server.

Mobile device management has been upgraded with streamlined enrollment, as well as new configuration options. Among these are wireless configuration of managed apps, custom font installation, configurable accessibility, and control over AirPlay and AirPrint devices. Data protection for apps is being improved through a system that exploits user passcodes to create "strong and unique" encryption keys.

The Mail app has gained options for adding and reorganizing smart mailboxes, which are accompanied by a redesigned search function. Users can also view PDF annotations, and sync notes through Microsoft Exchange 2010.

The finished iOS 7 release is due sometime in the fall.
