SK Telecom launches LTE-Advanced network, Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE-A

updated 07:09 am EDT, Wed June 26, 2013

Galaxy S4 LTE-A gains Snapdragon 800 running at 2.3GHz

Korean carrier SK Telecom has launched its LTE-A network in the country, the first of its kind in the world. The network, which offers connection speeds as high as 150Mbps and was seen in launch event tests to run at 100Mbps, is also accompanied by an updated version of the Samsung Galaxy S4 with LTE-Advanced compatibility.

The LTE-A network is available to SK Telecom customers in all of Seoul and central areas of Gyeonggi-do and Chungcheong-do, and expects to expand coverage to 84 cities across the country. Aside from faster connections for web browsing, SK Telecom will start offering its customers access to 1080p video streams on its Btv IPTV service in July, which will include various free videos, multi-channel video shopping, and multi-view baseball broadcasts. While the high-speed technology has rolled out in South Korea first, it may appear in the US sooner rather than later, as both Sprint and AT&T are rumored to be working on their own LTE-A networks.

The Galaxy S4 with LTE-A is, for the most part, the same as the standard Galaxy S4. Supplied with 32GB of storage, it includes LTE-A radios, as well as an upgrade from the eight-core Exynos or quad-core Snapdragon 600 running at 1.9GHz to the quad-core Snapdragon 800 clocked at 2.3GHz.

Though SK Telecom is not going to charge its customers extra for LTE-A access, the price of the Galaxy S4 LTE-A has increased to 954,000 won ($825).
