Sony reveals SmartWatch 2 with larger, higher-resolution screen, NFC

updated 06:04 am EDT, Tue June 25, 2013

Sony SmartWatch 2 can pair with smartphone using one-touch NFC

Sony has revealed it is making a second wearable computing device, something the company teased at the end of last week. The Sony SmartWatch 2 offers a larger 1.6-inch, 220x176-resolution touchscreen display compared to an earlier version of the watch, and this time adds a casing that's declared to be both dust and water resistant to an IP57 rating.

The second-screen device for an Android smartphone communicates over Bluetooth 3 for notifications, incoming call alerts, and remote control of on-phone applications. Charging now takes place over a standard micro-USB socket rather than the proprietary cable used in the original, while the battery is claimed to last for around three to four days. NFC also makes an appearance in the device, though it is mainly employed just for faster pairing between the watch and a smartphone, but it is suggested that it could use various SmartTags and NFC on wireless headsets and TVs in the future.

While Sony has suggested the SmartWatch 2 will be going on sale in September, it did not mention how much it will cost. The original SmartWatch currently sells for $100.
