Sensor under rear clip can measure rate of pulse

Withings is attempting to enter the activity tracking market by releasing its own fitness tracker. The Withings Pulse, a rebranded version of a device shown at CES earlier this year, is a clip-on pedometer with similar features to the Jawbone Up, Nike Fuelband, and the Fitbit range of trackers, though it is able to measure a heart rate when the wearer touches the unit's back.

The Pulse is able to measure the elevation climbed, the steps taken, the distance traveled by the user, calories burned and an active calorie count. It is also able to track the quality of sleep, the duration of sleep, the ratio of light to heavy sleep, and count the number of interruptions. This all gets sent to a smartphone or tablet over Bluetooth 4.0 to a free iOS or Android app, and also provides feedback on its 128x32-resolution OLED touchscreen display.

Withings are aiming to ship the Pulse out within the next 30 days, at a cost of $100.
