iPhone 5 coming to Virgin Mobile USA on June 28th

updated 10:26 am EDT, Fri June 21, 2013

Prepaid carrier catches up to rivals

The US branch of Virgin Mobile will finally carry the iPhone 5 beginning June 28th, according to an announcement. As with any smartphone on Virgin the iPhone will be sold contract-free, in this case costing $550 for 16GB, $650 for 32GB, and $750 for 64GB. The main advantage of the carrier will be its monthly plans, which start at $35 per month and include unlimited texts plus 2.5GB of 3G/4G data. After the 2.5GB mark, speeds are throttled.

The only differences in each plan are the number of voice minutes. The $35 plan includes 300 minutes, while $45 bumps the limit to 1,200, and paying $55 gets unlimited calling. In each case subscribers can save $5 per month by signing up for automatic billing.

Virgin has lagged behind other US prepaid carriers in selling the iPhone 5. The company operates off of the Sprint network however, and by extension offers the same voice, 3G, and LTE coverage.
