Microsoft creates Bing Boards curated content to search results

updated 02:27 pm EDT, Fri June 21, 2013

Experiment will provide curated links, videos, images to specific searches

Microsoft has added curated content to its Bing search engine, in the form of Bing Boards. The experimental item is a visual collection of images, videos, and links that are organized by users about a specific topic, rather than being created algorithmically, and are designed to be complementary to normal search results.

While it is not a fully public project yet, Microsoft is working with a "small group of food and lifestyle bloggers, experts and social influencers" to create initial content and to pass feedback for further refinement, writes the Bing blog. As time goes on, it will expand to add more people and subjects to the content-curation pool, but it has yet to decide how to "broaden and evolve the offerings."

The extra content could be compared to the Google Knowledge Graph cards, which accompanies some Google search results, though the use of humans to pick and choose content instead of algorithms could lead to more appropriate, varied and tailored content to be provided to search users.
