Video and audio 'mash-up' tool gains new features, 'App of the Week' honor

Vjay, a remixing app for iOS that lets users mix and match video and audio with transitional, beat-matching and "scratch" effects has been updated with new features aimed at the latest models of iPad and iPhone, and has been named an "App of the Week" on the iTunes store and made available for free for a limited time. The iPad version normally sells for $10 and works with the iPad 2 and later, while the separate iPhone version (usually $3) requires an iPhone 4S or later. Video time-stretching and key-lock are among the new features.

The latest version now comes pre-loaded with content from rap star Snoop Dogg along with music videos, loops and visual clips from many other sources that can be played alongside music from the users' iTunes library or other collections. The resulting mash-ups and music videos can be shared on HDTV and other systems through AirPlay and shared directly with Facebook and YouTube. An impressive demo of the capabilities of the iPhone version is seen below.

Some of the new features are aimed solely at the latest iPhone, iPod touch and iPad models. For example, the long-requested "key lock" feature -- which changes the speed of audio or video clips without altering the pitch -- requires an iPhone 5 or an iPad 4. The feature, along with beat-matching and in-sync "scratching" allows nearly anyone to mix audio and video clips freely in real-time to create unique audio-visual mixes.

The program includes plenty of effects, transitions, visual wave forms of the music to help know when to trigger a change, pre-queing with headphones and beat or tempo detection. The app also works with a number of hardware controllers from other companies, allowing finer control over selections, scratching, looping and more. It can record live mash-ups as a movie for later sharing, and even allows live video through the device's camera to be used, or new music to be bought directly from the iTunes Music store.
