Pegatron CEO says 'price is still high' for low-cost iPhone

updated 09:27 am EDT, Thu June 20, 2013

Statement appears to back device and Pegatron's involvement

The low-cost iPhone still won't be cheap, says Pegatron CEO T.H. Tung. China Times reports that the executive made the comment during a shareholders' meeting earlier today, where he argued that "cheap" isn't a term that should be associated with Apple's upcoming product. He added that when compared with basic feature phones, smartphones are offering increasingly higher value for their cost.

Tung's statements appear to back both the existence of the phone and Pegatron's involvement in its assembly. While reports have differed on which companies will be responsible for manufacturing the device, recent reports have generally pointed to Pegatron being in charge, with Apple's main supplier Foxconn handling the next flagship iPhone, typically expected to be the 5S.
