LG to use Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 in Optimus G series replacement

updated 06:52 am EDT, Thu June 20, 2013

Snapdragon 800 claimed to have 75-percent more performance than S4 Pro

LG will be using the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor in a future replacement for the manufacturer's Optimus G series of smartphones. The change in processor is an upgrade from the earlier Snapdragon chips used in earlier Optimus G devices, with LG claiming it to have "up to 75-percent better performance" than the Snapdragon S4 Pro.

The Snapdragon 800 uses the Krait 400 architecture with four asynchronous cores, capable of reaching 2.3GHz. Accompanied by the Adreno 330 GPU, it is able to accept LTE connections, offers video capture and playback at Ultra HD resolution, HTS-HD and Dolby Digital Plus audio processing, and Miracast.

While LG has confirmed it is working on a successor to the Optimus G series, its statement provides few clues as to what it will use, aside from the processor. LG head of marketing Won Kim advised in an interview in April that that it will be "something different and something unique," and could have a screen size of at least 5 inches. There is an outside chance that this could refer to the flexible display manufacturing process that the company will be commencing production on later this year.
