PlayStation 3 firmware update 'bricks' some consoles, no current fix

updated 12:19 am EDT, Wed June 19, 2013

Some users impacted by unknown bug, no Sony response

Sony has deployed a new firmware update for the PlayStation 3 console intended to improve system stability. Reports, however, are surfacing of some users who are unable to boot the updated console after the application of the patch, and restoring the console's file system has in those cases failed to fix the problem.

Perusal of the support forum show that many iterations of the console are affected -- both the newer "slim" model and others dating all the way back to launch. Failure manifests in the boot process not progressing past the welcome screen and the "flowing ribbon." No users who are experiencing the problem report an interrupted update process, nor any other problems prior to the application of the firmware patch.

Sony has yet to respond to the reports of trouble. Users are suspecting hard drives may be the culprit for the "bricked" systems, but there seems to be little commonality at this point.
