Player for UHD televisions offers 4K video, Red file playback

Cinema camera manufacturer Red has started shipping its 4K media player. Users of the Red User forum have started to receive their pre-orders of the Redray Player, which Red bills as a comprehensive media source for owners of Ultra HD televisions that is capable of playing back native 4K video, upscaled HD video, and the company's own 4K .Red file format.

Capable of connecting to UHD displays over a single HDMI 1.4 connection or four HDMI 1.3 outputs with an extra HDMI output for 7.1-channel audio, the Redray could also be used to show video on four 1080p displays. It expands from Blu-ray's 8-bit 4:2:0 color precision, opting for 12-bit 4:2:2 color, and will be able to play 4096x2160-resolution video in 3D at up to 60 frames per second. Content can be played back through its internal 1-terabyte drive, from an SD card, USB drives, or through in the future, according to Engadget. It is also shipping with an iOS app, which can be used as a remote control alongside the infrared one included with it.

Initially available as a pre-order for $1,450, Red is now shipping the Redray Player for $1,750.
