Aims to be first to market with LTE-Advanced smartphone

Samsung hopes to be the first smartphone manufacturer to launch a smartphone with LTE-Advanced connectivity, according to head of mobile business JK Shin. The high-speed smartphone will be another variant in the Galaxy S4 range of devices, and could be shipping to customers in South Korea before the end of this month.

Speaking to Reuters, JK Shin claimed that the company had already spoke to a number of overseas mobile phone networks about offering the device, though he declined to provide names. The new LTE-Advanced version will end up costing more than the currently-offered versions of the Galaxy S4, states Shin, continuing "We'll be the first with the commercial launch of the advanced 4G version of the smartphone."

Quite a few carriers are said to be working on LTE-Advanced networks, with both Sprint and AT&T rumored to be doing so in the United States. The LTE-Advanced connections are expected to allow for speeds as high as 300Mbps for carrier customers, around 150Mbps for US carriers, and while they are being worked on by carriers, it may be some time before they are activated for use by subscribers.

In the same interview, Shin claimed that the store-inside-a-store concept that Samsung is operating within Best Buy branches has helped the company, with sales of tablets up 3.3 times as much as they were before the stores were added. Samsung is now thinking about pushing the store format into other markets, including in Latin America and the United Kingdom.
