Rumor has Mac Pro assembly being handled by Flextronics

updated 10:41 am EDT, Thu June 13, 2013

Singapore firm would use US facilities

The new cylindrical Mac Pro will be built by Flextronics, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo tells the Chinese-language Economic Daily News. The claim would be consistent with Apple statements that the computer will be built in the US. While Flextronics is based in Singapore, it has plants around the US, including ones in Texas, California, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and the Carolinas.

Apple has touted US Mac production as an aid to the American economy, but the Mac Pro is not expected to make much of a dent in that regard. The computer is a niche product aimed at professionals, and won't be manufactured in the same quantities as the iMac, MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air. EDN remarks that because most of Apple's supply chain is still overseas, it would be hard to assemble something more popular than the Mac Pro stateside.

I disagree. You can fly the parts in cheaper than the finished items and once you get a manufacturing setup done correctly, you can build larger quantities too. But it would have to be done with out side the box thinking. Current American mfg thinking is still stuck in the 1960's.

    Just a thought.
