MetroPCS starts Bring Your Own Phone GSM-based service in four cities

updated 05:59 am EDT, Thu June 13, 2013

Boston, Dallas, Hartford, Las Vegas first to offer unlocked device service

MetroPCS has launched its Bring Your Own Phone (BYOP) service, and is starting with a small initial area rollout. Rumored earlier this month, the BYOP service will allow customers to bring unlocked GSM devices they already own to the carrier, and will initially work in Boston, Dallas, Hartford, and Las Vegas before becoming more widely available.

At launch, MetroPCS is allowing for phones running Android or Windows Phone, iPhones, and "certain feature phones" onto its GSM network, but will not be allowing BlackBerry devices, tablets, mobile hotspots nor "quick messaging devices" to onto its network. While it will allow new customers to use their devices on the $40, $50, and $60 plans, MetroPCS will not be providing support for devices brought over.

While the initiative allows for iPhones from other carriers to be unlocked and used on the MetroPCS network, it doesn't seem that the carrier will be getting the iPhone anytime soon. During the confirmation of the T-Mobile merger with MetroPCS, CEO John Legere said that there would not be an immediate change to the MetroPCS roster of devices, but stopped short of completely ruling it out.
