OS X Mavericks wallpaper hints at Retina iMac, Thunderbolt display

OS X Mavericks setting the stage for high DPI iMacs, TB displays?

Apple's Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks wallpaper hints at an incoming Retina iMac and Retina Thunderbolt display. Ahead of the debut of the completely redesigned late-2012 iMac, there was speculation that Apple would bring a Retina-level display to the new iMac. While that did not eventuate, the latest wallpaper for the OS X Mavericks beta includes a version that is 5120x2880 - or, exactly double the resolution of the already better than full HD, 2560x1440 display on the current 27-inch iMac and Thunderbolt display.

The image and its dimensions was spotted by Marvin Scharle of German Web site design company Conclurer, who posted the image to Twitter. The image of the well-known Mavericks surf break of the coast of Pillar Point California has become the theme for the next version of Apple's OS X desktop operating system. According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, at least the next few iterations of Mac OS X will be named after "places in California that inspire us." Apple has been retooling Mac OS X in recent generations to support high DPI displays, making it seem inevitable that it will bring Retina resolutions across its much of its line-up.

While the iMac was only relatively recently upgraded, the Thunderbolt display retains the design and specifications as when it was first introduced in September 2011. The new iMac is much thinner from the side than the display-only Thunderbolt display, even though the iMac packs in the complete innards of a powerful desktop computer into it. It also continues with now outmoded ports including Firewire 800 and USB 2.0 technology, which has almost been eliminated from Apple's portfolio. The eventual launch of the new Mac Pro could also bring with it a high DPI Thunderbolt display, if it does not debut before hand. [via CNET]
