Mad Catz reveals more details about Project M.O.J.O Android console

updated 10:19 am EDT, Mon June 10, 2013

Tegra 4 confirmed, Nvidia Shield streaming technology on board

Game peripherals producer Mad Catz has provided more information about its Android-based micro-console. Project M.O.J.O. has been confirmed as being powered by an Nvidia Tegra 4 system-on-chip, will be supplied with the C.T.R.L.R. game controller, and takes up a smaller footprint than its direct competition, the Kickstarter-funded Ouya.

The wedge-shaped device offers two USB ports, Bluetooth Smart 4.0, Wi-Fi, HDMI, and headphone connectivity, and will be able to accept wired, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth-based controllers. Running on stock Android 4.1, the console differs from the Ouya by eschewing the custom game store in favor of allowing games to be bought from Google Play, reports IGN. In order to allow for the touchscreen navigation and controls of many tablet titles, the controller will have a "mouse mode," with a further "solution" for games with multi-touch requirements also promised.

Another thing that the M.O.J.O. has that beats the Ouya is its built-in storage. The version shown has 16GB built-in, and also has a microSD card slot on the back to extend this further. In a nod to Nvidia's Shield device, it will also offer the ability to stream games from a PC to the console over a Wi-Fi network, in order to play the game on a TV.

The console and controller are still being worked on by Mad Catz, and so the specifications still need to be finalized, but the company is looking towards releasing the console, expected to cost around the $100 mark, later this year.
