Beamforming to improve performance for specified devices

Phil Schiller has revealed updated versions of its AirPort base stations at WWDC, made to accommodate the improved Wi-Fi in the revised MacBook Air, confirming earlier rumors. The new AirPort Extreme and Time Capsules can now connect wirelessly over three-stream 802.11ac, which will provide up to 40-percent faster file transfers compared to previous versions the networking performance of 802.11n connections.

The new AirPort base stations measures 4-inches wide and 6.5-inches tall. The antenna array allows for beamforming, namely improving performance to a specific device, on top of the performance increase and dual-band connections. The new AirPort Time Capsules add in options for a 2TB or 3TB drive, on top of the improved networking.

The new AirPort Extreme is listed on Apple's online store at $199, while the revised Time Capsule is $299 for the 2TB version and $399 for the 3TB model.
