Galaxy S4 Zoom cameraphone pics leak ahead of London event

updated 01:29 pm EDT, Sat June 8, 2013

Photography-centric Galaxy device shown off in new pic

Ahead of a London media event that will see the unveiling of unspecified new Galaxy and Ativ devices, an image has emerged of a new Galaxy handset that appears to be specifically targeted at photography lovers. The device, dubbed the Galaxy S4 Zoom, first showed up in press photos obtained by SamMobile, and later in hands-on shots from TechTastic. The images all show off a much beefier device than the standard S4 model, with Samsung having sacrificed slimness in order to put better imaging technology into the handset.

The build of the S4 Zoom shows a device much more focused on photography than most other handsets besides Nokia's Lumia line. In addition to the standard smartphone controls, the S4 Zoom sports a dedicated shutter button, and the volume rockers are said to control the zoom on the device when it is in camera mode.

Reports have the Galaxy S4 Zoom bearing a 4.3-inch qHD sAMOLED display, a 1.6GHz dual-core processor, and 8GB of internal storage with the ability to expand to 64GB with a microSD card. It will also run Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with Samsung's TouchWiz Nature UX overlaid. Reportedly, it will also be able to make calls.

The S4 Zoom will join the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S4 Active, and Galaxy S4 mini in Samsung's line of recent Android devices. The cameraphone will likely see an official unveiling at an event scheduled for June 20 in London. It will likely share that event with the Galaxy S4 mini and an array of devices from Samsung's Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8-based Ativ line.

The S4 Zoom had previously shown up on the Bluetooth SIG group site for Bluetooth 4.0 certification, signaling that the South Korean tech giant would be looking to spark a rejuvenation of the cameraphone segment. Samsung last year debuted the Galaxy Camera, an Android-powered device that sits somewhere between the common point-and-shoot camera and the dedicated digital SLR.
