Amazon releases Kindle Fire HD, Kindle Paperwhite in China

updated 11:58 am EDT, Fri June 7, 2013

Device launch follows rollout of Amazon Appstore in the region last month

Amazon has launched its Kindle range of mobile devices in China, with sales in the country following on from a wider Kindle Fire HD release. Both the e-reader and tablet versions of the Kindle catalog are represented in the country, with two versions of the Kindle Fire HD and the Kindle Paperwhite receiving prominent placement on the front page of Amazon's Chinese retail site.

Aside from software changes specifically for the Chinese market, mostly language-based, the hardware is identical to devices sold elsewhere. The Kindle Fire HD is being sold for 1499 yuan ($244) for the 16Gb version, with the 32GB model going for 1799 yuan ($293) according to The Next Web. The Kindle Paperwhite is priced at 849 yuan ($138) in the region, and like its tablet-based stablemates, only has Wi-Fi connectivity. Models with 3G access or similar could be launched in the country at a later time.

Last month, Amazon opened up its Android Appstore for paid apps in China, ahead of Google and its Play store. Despite being the first main Western app store to launch on Android in the country, both the store and the Kindle Fire HD will need to fight against a large number of locally-produced app stores and tablets in order to be successful.
