Maxis and EA delay Sim City for Macintosh to August

OS X version 'not ready for prime time' according to producer

Despite making some progress on the game overall with recent patches, Maxis and Electronic Arts have revealed that the Macintosh version of the problem-plagued game Sim City, previously due June 11 has been pushed to an unspecified date in August. An official developer blog post by senior producer Kip Katsarelis made the decision because "we do not believe it is ready for primetime yet."

The game released to widespread reports of connectivity issues preventing game play. Disabling of some features in an attempt to stem the tide of users being unable to connect to the servers only enraged users more, and did little to solve the problem. A 2.0 patch for the game in late April found users cataloging a litany of new and continuing problems with the game. Players are still complaining of city modeling issues, leader boards with no data, issues with the restored "Cheetah" mode, unusable old cities, graphical issues, continued traffic pathing problems and more.

Update 3.0 contained some traffic-related fixes, and some other bug fixes. Update 4 restored the previously removed leader boards, region filters, and other features excised from the program in the interest of early purchaser connectivity. Each patch has brought free content to the game in the form of parks and other structures.

Update 5 was originally planned for after the Macintosh release, but it is unclear if that is still the case as it now seems to be scheduled for release in "a couple of weeks." The new patch is focused on improvements to multiplayer and multi-city play, which were touted as key features of the game pre-release. No discussions have been made if future patches to the game will be made on the PC and Macintosh in parallel, or separately.

I've read some reviews of the new Sim City. Can they just cancel the Macintosh version altogether? It would be better for Macs not to be associated with that thing.

As a SimCity fanboy, I am not happy to have to wait even longer. On the other hand, if it's really not ready yet, I fully understand. I would much rather have a fully usable game than a hack-job.

It doesn't appear to be the game I wanted to buy. I really wanted a decent simcity game again, and this is not it. I will not lose sleep if the mac version gets lost in the cracks.
